Two people were killed in single-vehicle accidents over the weekend, one in Ware County and one in Brantley County, said the Georgia State Patrol.
Marlyon Scott Steedley, 44, of Manor, died Friday night after his car crashed on Manor-Millwood Road just north of Windmill Road, said Donna Dismuke, GSP Waycross post secretary.
In Brantley County, Shirley Howard, 67, of Nahunta, died when her car crashed Saturday on Knox Road, said Dismuke.
Both were taken by ambulance to Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross where they were pronounced dead, Dismuke said.
Steedley was driving south on Manor-Millwood Road rounding a left curve when he over-steered his 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Dismuke said the vehicle crossed the centerline and into the northbound lane for 51 feet, then veered onto the shoulder, crossed a ditch for 33 feet striking a fence and going airborne for 39 feet, then landing on the fence a second time. A 1-by-6 piece of wood penetrated the passenger side windshield and struck the driver in the chest, Dismuke said.
The Jeep continued south for 47 feet along the fence line, striking the fence a third time and stopping in the east ditch, Dismuke said.
Ware County Fire personnel responded to assist, Capt. Joe McPhaul said, as seven men responded to the scene with two pieces of equipment, arriving at 11:21 p.m. They cleared the scene at 2:10 a.m.
Trooper Gentry Mattox investigated the 11:06 p.m. wreck on Manor-Millwood Road.
Dismuke said Howard was westbound on Knox Road when her 2005 Nissan Altima ran off the road for 100 feet, entered a south ditch and continued west for 42 feet before striking a road sign and several trees.
Sgt. Lisa Bowen investigated the accident Saturday at 5:11 p.m.
