A Waycross woman was tragically killed Friday night when she walked into the path of a pickup truck on State Street at its intersection with Wacona Drive, said Ware County Sheriff Randy Royal.
Mattie Lee Stokes Devers, 87, was taken by Ware County Emergency Medical Service ambulance to Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross where she was pronounced dead by the emergency room physician and Ware County coroner Atha Lucas.
Royal said witnesses reported that she parked her car in the parking lot of Dollar General and walked across the road to tack a yard sale sign on a pole. When she started back across at 7:32 p.m., she was hit by the truck.
Royal said everyone who knew the woman reported that one of her great pleasures was holding yard sales.
“Wendall James Brown, 38, of Waycross, was driving his 1997 Ford Ranger northbound on State Street,” said Royal. “As he approached, he told deputies he saw the woman hurriedly enter the road from the shoulder of the road and she stepped into the path of the truck. Witnesses told us he took every evasive move possible but could not avoid hitting her.”
Royal said the people at the scene complained about the fact that it was dark in the area and the street lights were not working.
“The witnesses stopped and rendered first aid until the EMTs arrived. She was then transported to the emergency room where she died,” said Royal. “The witnesses said the truck was not speeding at all. These witnesses did complain of heavy darkness in the area because the street light there was not on.”
Deputy Clay Carter and Sgt. Michael Merritt worked the scene for Ware County while Georgia State Patrol Trooper Ray Strickland conducted the official investigation.
