FOLKSTON — A home invasion here Tuesday evening turned deadly for the burglar as a woman in the house shot and killed him, said Charlton County Sheriff Earnest “Dobie” Conner.
At 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, the Charlton County Sheriff’s Office received a call from 198 Cedar Ridge Road in Folkston that a burglary was in progress at the residence of two sisters, ages 75 and 64, said Conner.
Deputy Nicholas McDowell and Folkston Police Officer Christopher Cook responded.
“When the officers arrived a short time later they found a black male, who was later identified as Jonathan Shellman Green, 40, of Folkston, lying at the edge of the yard near the street,” said Conner. “He was unresponsive and Charlton County EMS was dispatched.”
At some point not long thereafter, Green died, Conner said.
Two sisters living at the home told officers that the man had entered their domain and attacked them.
“One female victim, who is 75 years old, was found lying on the floor of her bedroom with a bad cut on her forehead,” said Conner. “The other female victim, who is 64 years old, was in another bedroom when she was attacked from behind. She was being choked but managed to get away from the attacker.”
Conner said the man left the bedroom momentarily and soon came back toward her.
“By then, she had gotten a small caliber pistol and shot at him three times,” said Conner. “He then left the home through the front door.”
The officers said they found blood inside the home, on the front porch and in the yard, Conner said.
The women were transported to a hospital where they were admitted and were treated for their injuries, Conner said.
“My office notified the Georgia Bureau Investigation Office in Kingsland, and agents from there responded,” said Conner. “The GBI Crime Scene Unit was also called in to process the scene. This is still an ongoing investigation.”
