A Ware State Prison guard driving a state-issued vehicle was injured Wednesday when he made a left turn into the path of an oncoming private vehicle and the two collided, said Ware County Sheriff’s Capt. Carl James.
Rodger Goddard Jr., 20, of Douglas, was taken by a Ware County Emergency Medical Service ambulance to Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross for treatment of a broken arm, said James.
The accident occurred about 7:30 p.m.
Byron Keith Irick, 56, of Blackshear, the other driver, was not injured in the crash, said James.
Goddard, driving a pickup truck with the Ware State Prison logo on the door, was southbound on Harris Road attempting to make a left turn when Irick’s truck approached from the opposite direction, headed north, and the two collided.
Both vehicles had moderate to extensive damage to the front ends. A sign at Ware State Prison was also destroyed in the crash.
James said Georgia State Patrol Trooper Dustin Stone was in charge of the accident investigation. He was assisted by Sgt. Travis McNease.
