Two Alma men wanted in connection with separate armed robberies in Alma over the holidays were arrested in Waycross Wednesday as they hid out at a Garlington Avenue apartment, said Waycross Police Capt. Hilton Boyett.
Daron Davon Smith, 21, who lives on Church Street in Alma, and Brandon K. Smith, 27, of 14th Street, Alma, were lodged in the Ware County jail awaiting transport to Alma, said Boyett.
Alma Police Chief Brandon Sellers said the Smiths, who are not related, were wanted in separate cases of armed robbery last month.
He said the first occurred Dec. 5 at Shorty’s Barbecue where Brandon Smith robbed employees and “we believe took a pretty good sum of money from there. Nobody was hurt in that.”
The second robbery involved Daron Davon Smith on New Year’s Eve when a robbery took place on Staten Circle in Alma. Sellers said nobody was hurt, although Smith fired a gun and the bullet came within inches of a person’s head.
Police here were tipped off at 10:50 p.m. that the two were thought to be in an apartment in the 300 block of Garlington Avenue.
“We certainly appreciate the folks at the Waycross Police Department for apprehending these two fellows,” said Sellers. “We were sending them tips and we are happy it worked out. They did good work and we are grateful for their help.”
Boyett said when police arrived, one of the men, Brandon Smith, tried to leave through an upstairs window but then re-entered the apartment. As lights were turned on inside the apartment, police saw the second man walking through the apartment and detained him. He at first told them his name was Anthony Florence, but then admitted his real name and that he was wanted by police in Alma, Boyett said.
Brandon Smith had a bottle in his pocket containing Schedule IV drugs and, Boyett said, a local charge of rugs possession was administered.
