HICKOX — A Brunswick teenager was severely injured Sunday when the four-wheel all-terrain vehicle he was driving struck a culvert and ejected him off the machine, said the Georgia State Patrol.
Brian White, 14, of Brunswick, was taken by helicopter to UF Health (formerly Shands) in Jacksonville, Fla. for treatment of serious injuries, said Amanda Dixon, GSP Waycross post secretary.
His passenger, Brett White, 14, of Brunswick, was not injured, said Dixon.
Driving a Yamaha four-wheeler, Brian White was southbound in the west ditch along Riverside Road about a mile from the U.S. 301 intersection in Hickox. Dixon said the machine was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck a culvert and became airborne.
The ATV landed on all four tires and continued south for another 62 feet before striking a concrete culvert at a high rate of speed, at which point the driver was thrown off the machine.
Dixon said witnesses who saw the crash told lawmen the ATV was “traveling at a high rate of speed” and that neither of the occupants was wearing a helmet.
Trooper Justin Jones investigated the 6:11 p.m. crash.
