Nine-year-old Dean Turner was diagnosed with leukemia during Christmas vacation.
After he received his first chemotherapy treatment, he whispered, “The battle is starting!” He then described to nurses and doctors how the chemo was fighting the cancer in his body “like a ninja.”
Appropriately called the “Ninja Run for Dean Turner,” a fundraiser is being put together to help his family with the medical and other costs associated with his fight against leukemia. It will occur Saturday, June 13.
The 5-K and one-mile fun runs will start and finish at Oak Hill Baptist Church, 10812 Central Ave., at 8 a.m.
The pre-registration deadline is June 1. Registration forms may be found at and the forms and payments may be taken to Ninja Run drop spots like the Childers Family YMCA and Salon Cheveux. Runners may register at the site the morning of the run.
The registration fees are $25 in advance, $30 the day of the run, for the 5-K and $10 for the fun run. The registration fee includes a T-shirt and other race day surprises. Prizes will be awarded.
All proceeds from the Ninja Run will help support the battle of brave ninja Dean Turner and his family.
