ATKINSON — A Nahunta woman was killed Sunday night when she was hit by a tractor trailer as she was walking in the eastbound lanes of the South Georgia Parkway (U.S. 82) in Brantley County near mile marker 26, a few miles from the Glynn County line, said the Georgia State Patrol.
Chrystal Bowman, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 10:05 p.m. accident, said Rhonda Swinea, GSP Waycross post secretary.
Nathan Lane, 36, of Hortense, driving a 2012 International tractor trailer, was eastbound in the inside lane of the five-lane highway, said Swinea.
The pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and was walking near the center lane, Swinea said, adding that she then crossed into the eastbound lane and walked into the path of the vehicle.
She said the driver side front of the tractor trailer hit the woman. On impact, Swinea said, she was thrown into the westbound lanes. The truck came to a stop in the center lane.
Bowman was pronounced dead at 10:35 p.m.
Trooper Myles Cooper is in charge of the investigation which is ongoing.
