A Waycross man was arrested Thursday about 1 p.m. and charged with several crimes including hit-and-run after his pickup truck struck another vehicle in the intersection of Carswell Avenue and Dewitt Street about 4 p.m. Wednesday and he fled, said Ware County Sheriff Randy Royal.
Clarence Jackson “Bo” Barnett, 60, was taken into custody and booked into the Ware County jail on charges of hit-and-run, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to stop at a stop sign about 1 p.m. Thursday. Royal said he posted bond and was released from jail several hours later.
Nobody was injured in the crash, Royal said.
Barnett, driving a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado, was approaching Carswell Avenue on Dewitt Street when he failed to stop at the stop sign. The sheriff said Barnett’s truck was hit in the passenger door by a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Clarence Martin Huffman, 57, of Dean Drive, which was eastbound on Carswell Avenue. Both vehicles had moderate damage.
A witness nearby heard the crash and went to see if anyone was injured. Royal said the witness observed Barnett fleeing the accident scene and followed him, trailing him to Albany Avenue westbound to a private road. The witness then discontinued his pursuit and reported to 911 where the man had gone.
Deputy Daniel Guest then went to the location and found the truck with the matching damage. An arrest warrant was issued and served on Barnett later Thursday afternoon.
