DIXIE UNION — A man was arrested for shooting two dogs Tuesday, his own and a neighbor’s, said Ware County Sheriff Randy Royal.
Michael L. Smith, 56, of North River Road, was charged with cruelty to animals and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Royal said. He was transported to the Ware County jail.
At 4:26 p.m. Tuesday, Deputy Paul Carter responded to a call about a dog being shot on North River Road, Royal said.
The man who reported the shooting told Carter he was riding an ATV  with two of his grandchildren when they heard the sound of a single shotgun blast at a neighbor’s house, Royal said. Soon after that, they came upon a six-month-old puppy that had been shot and had dragged itself to the road and died.
Carter made contact with Smith at the house where the shot was heard. The man admitted to finding the puppy digging to get under a fence where his dog was penned, going inside to get a shotgun and shooting both dogs. He said he didn’t realize the young dog belonged to a neighbor, Royal said.
Deputy Travis Stauffer was called to transport Smith to jail.
