Three fires burned approximately 58 acres of forest in the Indian Mound Church Road area between Carswell Avenue and the Manor-Millwood Road Wednesday, said Ware County Sheriff Randy Royal.
“The fires were closer to Carswell Avenue/Highway 122,” Royal said.
The sheriff said his office is investigating the case as possible arson because the fires’ origins are “suspicious.” He has called the Georgia Forestry Arson Unit in to assist in the investigation.
Sheriff’s deputies handled traffic while firefighters from Ware County Fire and Rescue Station 1, volunteers from the Millwood station and Ware, Clinch and Rayonier firefighters from Georgia Forestry responded to the 2:58 p.m. call of two fires, Royal said. Those fires burned toward each other and consumed about 55 acres.
A third fire was discovered within a mile and a half of the others. It burned nearly three acres, Royal said.
