A man was killed and another badly injured in a single-vehicle accident Friday near Waynesville, one of several southeast Georgia traffic accidents in recent days, said a Georgia State Patrol spokesperson.
John Futch, 49, of Surrency, was killed in the 3:50 p.m. accident on Highway 32, said post secretary Amanda Dixon. His GMC Sierra was traveling westward when it left the roadway near mile marker 10, traveled 405 feet on the shoulder of the highway, struck a private drive dirt embankment and flipped onto the its roof.
Futch, the driver, and the passenger, Darryl Goode, 34, of Surrency, were ejected, Dixon said. Goode was listed in critical condition and transported by AirEvac to UF Jacksonville (formerly Shands).
The accident was investigated by GSP Trooper J.K. Jones.
Meanwhile, a log truck driver was injured Monday when his loaded truck overturned as he attempted to avoid hitting a deer in the road, said Ware County Sheriff Randy Royal.
Rodney Jerome Carter, 55, of Alma, was treated at the scene of the 2:23 p.m. accident by Ware County EMTs and then transported to Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross suffering lower back and neck pain (and other injuries), Royal said.
Royal reported that Carter was driving a 2007 International log truck fully loaded northward on Swamp Road and entering a curve near Obediah’s Trail when a deer, Carter said, ran into his lane of travel.
Carter said he swerved to avoid the deer and lost control of the truck. It left the road and overturned, Royal said. The driver was trapped inside the truck and had to be extricated by Ware County Fire and Rescue personnel.
Georgia State Patrol Trooper Chris Williams was in charge of the accident investigation. He was assisted by Ware County Sheriff’s Cpl. Ethan Murray.
In another accident, two riders on an ATV were injured on a private hunting club road in Clinch County Saturday, said Dixon, GSP post spokeswoman.
Gregory Batten, 55, of Douglas, the driver of a Polaris Ranger ATV, was injured when he attempted to steer the vehicle around a washout and lost control, causing the ATV to rotate and then overturn, Dixon said.
A passenger, Elias Batten, 13, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., was also injured, Dixon said. Both were transported by Clinch County EMS to South Georgia Medical Center.
The accident occurred at 2:02 p.m. Saturday on Road No. 26 south of Antioch Church Road inside a hunting club, Dixon said.
The accident was investigated by GSP Cpl. Josh Taylor.
A woman was injured in a collision on East 7th Street in Alma Sunday afternoon, said Dixon.
Deveny Mosby, 25, of Alma, was transported by Bacon County EMS to Bacon County Hospital for treatment of injuries caused by the 4:57 p.m. accident, said Dixon.
Erick Robertson, 18, of Nicholls, was driving a Ford Explorer north on Baker Street and turned left onto East 7th Street into the path of a Ford Escort driven by Mosby, Dixon said. The Escort struck the driver’s side of the Explorer near the driver’s door.
There were other passengers but none were injured, Dixon said.
The accident was investigated by GSP Trooper Merritt Meeks.
