Joseph ‘Joe’ Rooks
HORTENSE — Joseph “Joe” Franklin Rooks, 76, of Hortense, passed away Sunday (Aug. 30, 2015) at his residence following an extended illness.
Born in Waynesville, he was the son of Henry Clayton Rooks, of Gardi, and the late Vinter Clara Gibson Rooks. He was also preceded in death by his wife and sweetheart of 54 years, Martha Evelyn Dailey Rooks.
He worked many years as a route driver for Derest Baking Co. He attended Trinity Church of the Nazarene and loved praising the Lord and going to church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and loved his family dearly.
He served his country in the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include his son, Darryl C. Rooks, of Waynesville; three daughters and a son-in-law, Cheryl Lewis, of Hortense, Donna Dowler (John), of Hoboken, Genora McElroy, of Hortense; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and one on the way; his father and stepmother, Henry Clayton Rooks (Inee), of Gardi; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerome Rooks (Sarah), of Brunswick, Roy Rooks (Barbara), of Claxton, Glenn Rooks (Pat), of Hortense, Lonnie Rooks, also of Hortense; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda Lee (Cliff) and Glenda Patterson (Donald), all of Hortense; and his special hunting buddy, Jordan Melton; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
A funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Donald Patterson, the Rev. Joey Taylor and the Rev. Hinton Johnson officiating.
Burial will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery with full military honors.
Pallbearers will be Jordan Melton, Leslie Rooks, Leon Rooks, Joby Walker, Mike Ray and John Dowler.
Arrangements are with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.

Carolyn M. Walter
Carolyn Elizabeth Morgan Walter, 73, of Canton, passed away Saturday (Aug. 29, 2015) at her residence following an extended illness.
Born in Nahunta, she was the daughter of Waldo Emerson Morgan and Gladys Margaret Smith Morgan.
She worked many years as a real estate agent. She attended North Ridge Church of Christ, enjoyed cooking, gardening, playing banjo and was a golf instructor and loved the game.
She was a member of the Fair Tax Committee and Republican National Committee.
Survivors include her husband, John Foster, of Canton; a son and honorary daughter, Robert David Walter (Elishe Distin), of Kennesaw; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sherill Lynn Sisco (Anthony G.), of Canton, Lauren Renee Arnett (Charles), of Kennesaw; 10 grandchildren, Shelby Morgan Sisco, Kelsey Marie Walter, Sarah Belle Arnett, Dallas Emerson Sisco, Chloe Renee Arnett, Hailey Elizabeth Walter, Steiven Carlos Arnett, Brooklyn Foster Huthsteiner, Evelyn Dawn Phillips and Edward Arthur Ellis Distin; a brother, Alton Morgan, of Nahunta; and a sister, Trellis Crews, of Nahunta; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will be held this evening from 6 until 9 o’clock at Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
A funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1 o’clock at Raybon Church of God of Prophecy with Brother Anthony G. Sisco officiating.
Burial will follow in Smyrna Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Anthony Sisco, Rob Walter, Charles Arnett and Dallas Sisco.

Pastor Wilbert King
Pastor Wilbert King, of Waycross, formerly of Los Angeles, Calif., transitioned to be with his Lord on Friday (Aug. 28, 2015) at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Jesup.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara King; and other relatives and friends.
The family is receiving friends at the family residence, 705 Sargeant St., during the hours of 4 through 7 p.m.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Perry Brothers Funeral Home, 1100 Ossie Davis Parkway, Waycross.

Robert Stanley Waters
Robert Stanley Waters, 66, of Waycross, passed away Friday (Aug. 28, 2015) at his residence.
Born in Waycross, May 8, 1949, he lived in Pierce and Liberty counties for several years before moving to Waycross five years ago. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during the Vietnam conflict and later worked as a meat cutter at the Fort Stewart Commissary for several years.
A member of First Baptist Church of Blackshear, he was of strong Christian faith. He loved the Lord with all his heart, soul and mind. He will be remembered as an humble and loving person who was always happy and never complained about anything. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
He was a son of the late William Vernon Waters Sr. and Frances Westberry Waters. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Cheryl Diane Copeland, and two brothers, James K. Waters and Larry Edward Waters.
Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Jacqueline and Ralph Dixon, of Hinesville; his brother and sister-in-law, William Vernon Jr. and Shirley Waters, of Jacksonville, N.C.; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Pearson-Dial Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Waters Cemetery.
