A Brunswick teenager who was seriously injured Saturday in a rodeo barrel racing accident remains in critical condition at UF Health Jacksonville, said Ware County Sheriff Randy Royal.
Kyle Louis Chandler, 17, was initially taken by ambulance to Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross for examination and treatment of his injuries, said Royal. He was later transferred to the Jacksonville hospital.
“He is in critical but stable condition,” said Royal. “The family is asking for prayers for him.”
Royal said Chandler’s horse tripped and fell, causing the teen’s head to hit the ground hard. His leg was also briefly trapped under the fallen horse.
Royal said he was unconscious when the ambulance departed from the Saddle Club arena on Gorman Road.
The sheriff said the accident happened about 9 a.m. Saturday. Chandler and his horse were making a turn around the final barrel in the event when Chandler’s foot got tangled in equipment.
