A man and a woman were shot and killed in the Old Nine section of Waycross overnight by an intruder at their house just west of town, police said.
The murders happened in the presence of “several children” a few minutes after 1:30 this morning on Glenmore Avenue, Waycross Police Capt. Danny Hampton said.
Alonzo Brown, 41, and Yolanda Faison, 31, both who lived in the house in the 900 block, were shot there, Hampton said.
“About 1:35 this morning, officers with the Waycross Police Department were dispatched to a house in the 900 block of Glenmore Avenue in reference to someone being robbed,” said Hampton. “When officers arrived, they discovered that an adult couple, who lived in the house, had been shot inside their home.”
Hampton said the man and the woman were later pronounced dead.
Waycross Police Capt. Benji Hersey said there were four children in the house at the time. He added that police are looking for one suspect but that the investigation is far from being over.
Broadcast media was reporting this morning that there were three children present. The discrepancy could not immediately be reconciled.
The children are now in the care of family members, Hampton said.
“The children were not hurt during the robbery and shooting,” said Hampton.
Hampton said he could not report on what gender they are or what ages.
“More details will be released as they are made available,” Hampton said. “Other than that, I cannot give out any details.”
Hampton said he did not have any information on suspects or a motive (other than robbery).
“I don’t know anything about the suspects, how they got to the house, why that house was the scene of the shooting or what kind of weapon was used,” said Hampton. “I don’t know if the shooters were acquainted with the victims. I have been told that stuff is coming out on social media, but I cannot address that.”
Hampton said Waycross police have been out all night on the case and are continuing to investigate.
Waycross Police Chief Tony Tanner was not available this morning.
