Fred Lester Thrift
Fred Lester Thrift passed away at his home in Hilliard, Fla. Monday (Oct. 24, 2016) at the age of 79.
He was born on Oct. 26, 1936 in Waycross to the late W.H. “Dub” and Marcella Thrift.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and retired air traffic controller, where he was awarded the Performance Award for 25 years of service without a single system error, which is an elite group.
He graduated from Jones College in 1976 with a bachelor degree of science in management. He was involved over the years in civic activities and coached many youth sports teams.
He was a very active member of Buford Grove Baptist Church where he served as activities director. He also kept up with the church website, wrote several plays and wrote the monthly church newsletter, The Herald.
He touched the lives of many and will be truly missed by his loving family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Jeanette Myers Thrift; three children, Hardy (Susan) Thrift, Debbie (Buddy) West and Stewart (Suzanne) Thrift; five grandchildren, Ashley (R.G.) Beasley, Brooke Thrift, Kyle Thrift, Summer Thrift and Luke Thrift; numerous great-grandchildren; and one brother, Glynn (Hilda) Thrift.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Buford Grove Baptist Church.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Buford Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Curtis Harrington officiating. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery, Waycross.
Arrangements are under the direction of Shepard-Roberson Funeral Home in Folkston.
Marie ‘Kay’ Shuman
Marie “Kay” Shuman, 72, of Douglasville, passed away Thursday (Oct. 6, 2016).
She was born July 23, 1944 in Valdosta. She was a retired cosmetologist and a member of Sweetwater Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Larry Shuman, with whom she would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in December, a daughter, Tina Prater (husband, Michael), a son, Robert Shuman (wife, Cheryl), nine grandchildren and a sister, Nancy Godwin.
She was preceded in death by her father, Elmer Lamar Nix, mother, Opal Hickox Nix Godwin, and step-father, Nathan H. Godwin Sr., a brother, Jack E. Nix, and half-brother, Nathan H. Godwin Jr.
Memorialization was by cremation.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hightower’s Memorial Chapel in Douglasville with the Rev. Bryan Alexander officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Ruth Virginia Jenkins
PLANT CITY, Fla. — Ruth Virginia Jenkins, 78, of Plant City, Fla., died Oct. 10, 2016.
Born in Tampa, Fla., she was the daughter of John Jr. and Evelyn Castleman Toole.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Richard Jenkins.
Survivors include her children, Leatha Harrell, Debbie Kline, Ruth Wallace, Ginny Stickle, David “Dejay” Jenkins, of Waycross, and Michael Brown, her siblings, Carol Sheffield, Geraldine Hamilton, Janice Jenkins, Alfred Toole and Jimmy Toole, 15 grandchildren, including Dayla (Billy) Howell, of Waycross, and 16 great-grandchildren.
She spent her life in the service of the Lord as a pastor’s wife, was raised in Welcome Baptist Church and attended many churches throughout her life. Her family meant everything to her.
The funeral was held Saturday, Oct. 15, at Welcome Baptist Church, Welcome Baptist Church Road, Lithia.
Haught Funeral Home assisted the family.

George R. “Randy” Blount, 78, died Tuesday morning (Oct. 25, 2016) at St. Vincent’s Riverside Hospice in Jacksonville, Fla., after a brief illness.
