Joseph P. Cone Jr.
AUGUSTA — Joseph Paul Cone Jr., 64, beloved husband of Paula Cone, lost his courageous battle to pancreatic cancer, Friday (Oct. 23, 2015).
He was born in Walterboro, S.C., but was currently living in Martinez. He was in the lumber business for his entire life and was the owner-operator of Thomasville Lumber Company.
During his lifetime he was also the owner-operator of re-manufacturing companies in Waycross, Blackshear and Quitman. He was a loving, caring husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a great listener, storyteller and enjoyed making people laugh.
Family members in addition to his wife include his mother, Betty Cone Hamlett; children, Joann Rock (Matt), Joseph “Joey” Randall Cone (Katrina); grandchildren, Justin Tyler Leabo, Kaylan Paula Cone, Kimberly Nicole Cone and Joshua Wayne Cone; sisters, Jan Cone Pye (Pete) and Jane Cone Moore (Haskell); brothers-in-law, John M. Beach (Susette) and Jim R. Beach (Terry); and nieces and nephews, Tammy, Scott, Dusty, Nikki, Lynn, Janna, Chris, Michael, Matt, Josh and their families.
A funeral will be held today at 2:30 p.m. in the Chapel at Thomas Poteet & Son with the Rev. Greg Porterfield officiating.
Interment will follow at Westover Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2607 Commons Blvd., Augusta, Ga. 30909.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service beginning at 2 p.m. at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Road, Augusta.

Alan Keen
Alan Keen, 57, of Waycross, passed away Wednesday (Oct. 21, 2015) at Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross following a sudden illness.
Born in Alma Feb. 5, 1958, he lived in Wayne County for several years before moving back to Waycross. A 1976 graduate of Ware County High School, he worked as a truck driver for 20 years before going to work with CSX where he was a locomotive engineer.
He enjoyed working with horses having been very active with the Ware County Saddle Club and loved spending time with his great-granddaughter and apple of his eye, MacKenzie Clark.
He was a son of the late Oliver Earl King. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Travis Keen.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Janice Moseley Keen, of Waycross; his son, Stephen Clark, of Waycross; his mother, Lavestle Taylor Keen, of Waycross; his grandson, Brandon Clark (wife, Haley); his great-granddaughter, MacKenzie Clark; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
The funeral was held Friday morning at 11 o’clock in the Pearson-Dial Chapel with the Rev. Paul Tyson and the Rev. Lamar Music officiating.
Interment was in the Jordan Cemetery in Ware County.
Active pallbearers were Jeffrey Mullis, Charlie Taylor, Brian Smith, Walter McCumbers, Andy Bennett and Bobby Peace.

Julian W. Thomas
Julian Walter Thomas, 39, of Nicholls, passed away suddenly Thursday (Oct. 22, 2015) in Coffee County.
He was son of the late Larry Milton Thomas and Geraldine Greer Thomas and was preceded in death by a brother, Terry Thomas, and a sister, Cynthia Thomas. He served two years in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy.
Survivors include his sister, Regenia Howell (husband, Kevin), of Nicholls; his girlfriend, Kasey Newberry, of Alma; six children, Jacob Thomas, Tyler Thomas, Blake Thomas, Raymond and Raygin Newberry and Savannah Scott, all of Alma.
The funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Southside Church of God with the Rev. Mark Carver officiating.
Interment will follow in Roberts Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 6 to 9 o’clock.
Active pallbearers will be James Lawson, James Meeks, Michael Tanner, Clint Harper, Antonio Harris and Darren Watson.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the class of 1994.

A graveside service for Martha Brantley Griffin was held Friday morning at Oakland Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Clendinen officiating.
Honorary Pallbearers were Miriam Starlime, Nancy Rio, Susan Drawdy and Melanie Brantley.
