Betty Jean King
Betty Jean King, 81, died Thursday afternoon (Oct. 8, 2015) at her residence following an extended illness.
She was a native of Pierce County but lived all of her life in Ware County. She was the wife of the late William Jerome King and the daughter of the late Hiram Prester Davis and Ida Jeanette Crews Davis. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Cleo Gunter and Julia Griffin, and a brother, Gilbert C. Davis.
She retired as a seamstress in 1990 from Matt’s Jacket after 20 years of service. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and the Red Hat Society. She will be remembered for her love of everyone and that she would rather give than to receive. She loved having a good time and laughter.
Survivors include three daughters, Virginia Bennett, of Waycross, Diane Corbett (husband, Jerry), of Waycross, and Joann Joyce (husband, Daniel W.), of Blackshear; five grandchildren, Matthew Corbett, Beth Mixon, Joey Mixon, Derek Joyce and Dalton Joyce; two great-grandsons, Isaac Corbett and Eli Corbett; a great-great-grandson, Dagan Lane Joyce, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives; and two very special friends, Evelyn Shubert and Shirley Connell.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Music Funeral Home Chapel. A private burial will be held in Greenlawn Cemetery.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. Reddy, Dr. Srinagesh and the Cancer Doctors and team of Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross for their care and concern in caring for their mother.

Violet Lee Hickox
FOLKSTON — Violet Lee Hodges Hickox, 96, of Folkston, passed away Friday (Oct. 9, 2015) at the Life Care Center in Hilliard, Fla.
She was born Feb. 6, 1919 in Nassau County, Fla., to the late Robert Oliver Hodges and Stella Rowe Hodges. She was employed with King Edward Cigars in Waycross for 38 years. She was a member of Grace Chapel Baptist Church.
After retirement she loved traveling and gardening and tending to her flowers at her home. Her greatest pleasure in life was her family. Each member held a special place in her heart
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Samuel Hickox, a son, Ralph Austin Hickox Sr., an infant son, Samuel Eugene Hickox, two grandsons, Matthew Curtis Gowen and Austin Taylor Robertson, two sisters, Becky Mae Jones and Lula Inman, and three bothers, Freddy Hodges, Fernie Hodges and Douglas Hodges.
She is survived by her son, Harley (Sandra) Hickox; three grandsons, Byron (Judith) Hickox, Jonathan (Ansley) Hickox and Ralph Austin (Jamie) Hickox Jr.; four granddaughters, Donna (Howard) Poe, Deborah (Robert) Shelnutt, Delores (Mike) Todd and Deanna Robertson; 14 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
The family will receive friends this evening at Shepard Funeral Home from 6 until 8 o’clock.
The funeral will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Grace Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. John Boatright officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery.

Willis Wayne Brewer
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —Willis Wayne Brewer, 72, of Waycross, passed away Wednesday (Oct. 7, 2015) at Community Hospice St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville, following an illness.
Born in Blackshear, Feb. 8, 1943, he was a son of the late Robert Carlton “R.C.” Brewer and Dorothy Elaine Smart Williamson. He lived many years in Jacksonville, Fla. before moving to Waycross in the mid 1980’s.
He was a retired cabinet builder who spent the majority of his life working with wood, and worked many years for the Spaulding Custom Cabinet Company and Boyett’s Custom Cabinet Company.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Verlon Brewer and Leon Brewer.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Bennett Brewer, of Waycross; a daughter, Melissa Brewer, of Waycross; three sons, Tony Brewer (wife, Lochlyn), of Kingsland, Stephen Brewer (wife, Denise), of Lady Lake, Fla., and Shane Brewer (wife, Rhonda), of Blackshear; a sister, Julie Gassway (husband, Bob), of Atlanta; a brother, Robert Brewer (wife, Linda), of Yulee, Fla.; six grandchildren, Jamie Minger (husband, Tony), Holly Terrell (husband, Rick), Winston Brewer, Courtland Brewer, Cameron Brewer and Kayla Rogers; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and numerous other relatives.
The graveside service will be held at 3 o’clock Monday afternoon at Beulah Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Alvin C. Rowland Jr.
Alvin C. “Buddy” Rowland Jr., 56, died suddenly Friday morning (Oct. 9, 2015) at Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Waycross and a former truck driver with Southland Waste. He was currently employed with Welch Construction and attended Liberty Christian Church.
He was a son of the late Alvin C. “Buddy” Rowland Sr. and Rosa Lee King Rowland.
He is survived by two children, Devon Yarbrough (Stacey), of Blackshear, and Alvin C. “Hub” Rowland III, of Waycross; two grandchildren, Austin Rowland and Dawson Rowland; former wife, Doris Rowland, of Waycross; five sisters, Jo Ann Fritz (Bobby), Judy Hester (Jimmy), Mary Rowland, Brenda Thomas (Junior) and Bernice King (Damon), all of Waycross; a brother, Michael Rowland (Missy), of Waycross; a special friend, Earlene Lambeth, of Waycross; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Liberty Christian Church. Burial will follow in High Bluff Cemetery.
