James H. Lawrence Jr.
James Hamilton “Jimmy” Lawrence Jr., 73, of Waycross, died Saturday afternoon (April 30, 2016) at Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross.
He was born in Waycross to the late Dr. James H. Lawrence Sr. and Virginia Sheppard Lawrence. Raised in Waycross, he was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow.
He graduated from Waycross High School in 1960. He then graduated from the University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources in 1964. After college he moved to Eastman where he worked as a division manager for Brunswick Pulp & Paper Company. While in Eastman, he was an elder of First Presbyterian Church of Eastman, and received the “Outstanding Jaycee Award” from the Eastman Jaycees.
He was transferred back home to Waycross. Shortly after, Brunswick Pulp & Paper Company sold to Rayonier. It was then that he founded Lawrence Forestry. He owned and operated Lawrence Forestry for more than 25 years before retiring. In Waycross he was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church of Waycross, where he served as chairman of the Worship Committee. He was a member of the Waycross Fishing Club and a former member of the Waycross Rotary Club and the board of directors of Southwood School.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his son, James Hamilton Lawrence III.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Watson Lawrence, of Waycross; his daughter, Katie Marie Lawrence, of Marietta; a daughter-in-law, Stacie Price Lawrence, of Canton; two grandchildren, Virginia Marie Lawrence and Cason James Lawrence, both of Canton; a brother, Walter Sheppard Lawrence (wife, Polley), of Roswell; a sister, Laura Virginia Lawrence (special friend, Maggie Watkins), of St. Simons Island; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Watson Werner (husband, Glen), and Connie Watson Beauchamp, both of Chiefland, Fla.; an aunt, Marian Sanford, of Louisville, Ky.; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church of Waycross.
Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Janie Ruth H. Deen
Janie Ruth Holland Deen, 85, died Saturday morning (April 30, 2016) at Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross after an extended illness.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Waycross. She was a member of First Baptist Church and director of community improvement for the City of Waycross.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Jackson Holland and Annie Myrtle Webster Holland, and her husband, James Christian Deen Sr.
Survivors include one son, James Christian Deen Jr., of Alpharetta; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

M.L. Hickson
Mark L. “M.L.” Hickson, 86, of Waycross, died Sunday evening (May 1, 2016) at Hospice Satilla Hospice House after a short illness.
He was born in Hazlehurst to the late Mark Bryant and Sarah Long Hickson. He retired in 1985 from the Waycross Fire Department as captain after 35 years of service. He was a member of First Advent Christian Church and was an ordained minister for more than 40 years. He always enjoyed fishing.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Morgan Hickson, two brothers, Irvin Hickson and Clyde Hickson, and two sisters, Irene Pafford and Maudine Long.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Hickson Barton, of Waycross; three grandchildren, Kristie Lee (husband, Cary), of Waycross, Helene Westmoreland (husband, Brent), of Dupont, Rhea Minor (husband, Brad), of Lawrenceville; 11 great-grandchildren, Forhest Soper (wife, Rhae), Cameron Lynn, Morgan Hendrick (husband, Johnnie), Logan Dukes, Kaitlyn Lee, Lawton Lee, Clayton Lee, Layna Minor, Addison Minor, McKenna Minor and Charlotte Minor; one brother, Ronald Hickson, of Bangkok, Thailand; one sister, Sally Thornton, of Jesup; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A graveside service will be held Thursday morning at 11 o’clock at Blackshear City Cemetery.
The family is receiving friends at his daughter’s home, 506 Spurgeon St., Waycross (between Tebeau and Alice streets).
