ALMA — An unknown driver escaped his fiery wreck of a pickup truck and left on foot the scene of a collision involving another pickup early today, said the Georgia State Patrol.
The other driver was injured in the wreck on Wolfpit Church Road at Drum Road just minutes after midnight this morning, said the GSP. Christopher Palmer, 26, of Alma, was taken by private vehicle to Bacon County Hospital following the 12:36 a.m. crash, said Steve Drury, GSP Brunswick post.
Palmer, driving a 1990 Chevrolet truck, was northbound on Wolfpit Church Road, attempting to make a left turn onto Drum Road, said Drury. A Ford 1994 Ford pickup truck behind Palmer attempted to pass Palmer’s truck, striking Palmer’s truck in the left side behind the driver’s door.
Drury said the collision propelled the Ford truck into a spin rotating counterclockwise across the west shoulder and that it overturned for 121 feet, coming to a stop in an open field where it burst into flames. The driver fled on foot.
Palmer’s truck also spun counterclockwise for 96 feet, then veered off the road for 32 feet and onto the shoulder.
Cpl. Josh Taylor investigated the accident.
Drury said lawmen are searching for the driver of the Ford pickup truck and have no information on his condition, whether or not he was injured.
