BLACKSHEAR — A Waycross man was seriously injured Tuesday when his car crashed and overturned on College Avenue near Ryan Road, said the Georgia State Patrol.
Tommy Boyd, 22, of Waycross, was taken by ambulance to Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross for examination following the 6:56 a.m. accident, said Amanda Dixon, GSP Waycross post secretary. Boyd was later taken by helicopter to Memorial Medical Center in Savannah for treatment of serious head injuries.
While the victim was still in the ER at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, his father, Tom Boyd, reported that he had been diagnosed with a fractured vertebrae in his neck and lacerations on his face, plus some head trauma.
Driving a Honda Accord, Boyd was southbound on College Avenue, driving at speeds too fast for road conditions, which were wet, said Dixon. The car began to spin counterclockwise for 95 feet and left the roadway on the east side for 15 feet before striking a utility junction box with the front passenger side.
Dixon said the car then continued for another 68 feet, hitting a tree with the passenger side. The car then spun counterclockwise for 56 feet while overturning, during which it struck several small trees. Dixon said the vehicle continued for another 44 feet before coming to rest facing east, a total of 278 feet traveled during the crash.
Trooper Miles Cooper investigated the accident.
