A Waycross man operating a wheelchair near the center turn lane of South Georgia Parkway at its intersection with New Street was killed when he was struck by an SUV Tuesday evening, said Waycross Police Major Chris Tatum, Field Operations Commander for the Waycross Police Department.
Rueben Dwight Robinson, 63, of Waycross, was operating the powered wheelchair. Tatum said he was found lying beside the chair in an unresponsive state following the collision with a 1999 Dodge Durango driven by Donnie Carter, 60, of Waycross.
Waycross Fire Department personnel and Ware County Emergency Medical Service Technicians administered CPR and rendered aid to Robinson. He was then transported by ambulance from the scene to Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross where he was pronounced dead.
The crash occurred in the inside westbound lane of travel on the South Georgia Parkway, said Tatum. Three lanes of traffic were closed on the South Georgia Parkway (Corridor Z) for about two hours while the scene was investigated. All lanes of the roadway were reopened about 8:48 p.m. The collision occurred at about 6:27 p.m.
Tatum said no charges have been filed at this time. The accident remains under investigation.
The wheelchair, a Jazzy Select brand, was heavily damaged in the collision.
Mr. Carter was not injured.
