A Kingsland man was injured Sunday morning after he apparently fell asleep at the wheel of his antique pickup truck and the vehicle crashed into a wooded area alongside U.S. 1 near Lloyd Strickland Road, said Ware County Sheriff Randy Royal.
Matthew Emmett Blackmon, 27, was taken by Ware County Emergency Medical Service ambulance to Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross for treatment of visible cuts following the 6:26 a.m. crash, said Royal.
Driving a 1966 Ford pickup, Blackmon was northbound on U.S. 1 near Lloyd Strickland Road when he dozed off, Royal said. The truck left the roadway and cut through some bushes before striking a tree, causing moderate damage to the front and top of the truck, said Royal.
Georgia State Patrol Trooper Jeffery Robinson was in charge of the investigation with assistance from Ware County Cpl. Craig Colley.
Meanwhile, in a separate traffic accident a popular local musician and educator was badly injured Friday when the motorcycle he was riding struck a railroad tie that had been overgrown by weeds, causing his cycle to crash near Park Avenue, said Royal.
John Russell Weaver, 55, of Riverdale Drive, was taken by Ware County Emergency Medical Service ambulance to Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross for treatment of a broken right leg following the 5:42 p.m. crash, said Royal.
Driving a 2005 Honda motorcycle, Weaver was leaving a residence on Park Avenue headed toward the road when the wheel of the motorcycle struck the large wooden plank. Royal said the motorcycle overturned and struck Weaver’s right leg.
Weaver was alone at the time of the accident, Royal said.
Ware County Sgt. John Walthour was in charge of the investigation.
