FOLKSTON — A Folkston man dressed in dark clothing walking in the dark was killed Thursday night when he was struck by a vehicle on Gibson Post Road, said the Georgia State Patrol.
Tommie Oliver, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 11:30 p.m. accident, said Amanda Dixon, GSP Waycross post spokesman.
The driver of the vehicle, a 2013 Ford Escape, Loretta Register, 49, of Folkston, did not have a phone with her and had to drive to a house to call 911, said Dixon.
“She thought she had hit a deer,” said Dixon.
Oliver’s body was found in a ditch, said Dixon.
Oliver was determined to be at fault as he did not yield to the oncoming vehicle and had no source of light (such as a flashlight or reflective device) or light clothing on, Dixon said.
Neither Register nor a passenger in the Register vehicle, Herman Smith, 10, was injured, Dixon said.
Trooper Sherman McClain was in charge of the investigation.
