A Waycross man in a wheelchair crossing the South Georgia Parkway at Lee Avenue Saturday night was killed when he was hit by a pickup truck, said Waycross Police Capt. Tommy Cox.
Michael McClellan, 60, died at Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross following the 10:21 p.m. accident, said Cox.
McClellan was crossing the five-lane highway at the Lee Avenue intersection, Cox said, as a 1998 Toyota Tacoma driven by James Rowell, 48, of Waycross, was westbound on the parkway and had the green light.
Witnesses told police that as the truck approached, McClellan tried to accelerate the speed of his non-mechanized wheelchair so as to beat the truck to the north side of the intersection, Cox said. He failed to make it, Cox said.
“There was absolutely nothing that Mr. Rowell could have done to avoid striking the man,” said Cox. “It was a tragic accident. Mr. Rowell was shaken but there was nothing he could have done. There were no contributing factors on Rowell’s part.”
Cox said the truck had extensive damage to the front.
Waycross Officer Robert Benton investigated the accident.
