Michael Maguire, a devoted husband of Barbara, loving father of Andrew James and Amanda Claire, world traveler, and successful businessman, died peacefully Monday (July 11, 2016) at the age of 72 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross.
He was born to the late Patrick Joseph and lived with step-mother, Ethel Maguire ne’e Parrot, along with his two brothers, John and Peter in Coventry, England.
He played professional soccer for many years in England, but after suffering a career ending injury during an exhibition match, he went back to school to obtain a mechanical engineering degree.
He was later moved to Montreal, Canada for a design engineering position with Pratt and Whitney, where he married Barbara and the couple’s son, Andrew James, was born.
He then transferred to Skaneateles, N.Y., where daughter, Amanda Claire, was born.
The whole family was then moved to his permanent home in Waycross where he worked for the Scapa Company.
He was very social in the Waycross community and greatly enjoyed playing golf at the Okefenokee Country Club.
He then took the position of president for National Wire Fabric in Pine Bluff, Ark., however he kept his family and permanent home in Waycross. He commuted from Waycross to Arkansas until his eventual retirement.
He spent the remainder of his days travelling, spending time with family and friends, and working on Barbara’s beloved garden at the home they made in Waycross.
Additionally, his passion for Formula 1 racing and professional sports such as soccer, golf and hockey kept him well entertained in his down time.
He lived a full, happy and healthy life. He wishes that instead of family and friends being saddened by his passing, they remember him fondly and take comfort and joy in the memories that they shared together.
The family will receive friends on Friday, Aug. 12, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Miles-Odum Funeral Home in Waycross.
Because of Michael and Barbara’s love of animals, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in the name of Michael Maguire to HART, the Humane Animal Resource Team in McIntosh County, Ga. http://hartofmcintosh.com/
