Danny Gara Altman, 62, died Tuesday morning (Jan. 13, 2015) at his residence following an extended illness.

Martha H. Mason
Martha Hopkins Mason, 91, of Waycross, died early Monday morning (Jan. 12, 2015) at Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross.
She was born in Waycross to the late William Hart Hopkins and Flora Anderson Hopkins. She attended Georgia College and State University for Women and took great pride in the fact that her daughter and granddaughter followed in her footsteps attending and graduating from her alma mater.
She met her husband, William Henry Mason Jr., in Waycross. They married and eventually settled in Massachusetts and Woodbridge, Conn. She worked as the city accountant for the City of Woodbridge, Conn., for many years. In 1988, the family moved back to Waycross and would settle here for the remainder of their lives.
She was an active member of First United Methodist Church where she volunteered in numerous capacities. She also served as a Pink Lady for the Satilla Regional Medical Center Auxiliary.
When she wasn’t volunteering her time for her church or hospital, she loved spending time in her garden at home. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who loved her family and any time she was able to spend with them. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Mason Jr., and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Hart Hopkins.
She is survived by two daughters, Susan Peterman (husband, Jim), of St. Marys, Carolyn Mason, of Lexington, Va.; five grandchildren, Kelli Kean (husband, Donald), of Raleigh, N.C., Cara Smith (husband, Mark), of Milledgeville, Christopher Griffith, of Lakewood, Colo., Jonathan Griffith (wife, Emily), of Glen Allen, Va., Marty Griffith, of Kansas, Mo.; six great-grandchildren, Addie Meade, Aaron Meade, Grace Smith, Kaylen Smith, Aiden Kean, Ava Griffith; a sister, Mary Jane Vredenberg, of Hunnington, Mich.; three brothers, William Hopkins (wife, Dorothy), of Waycross, Walter Hopkins (wife, Carolyn), of Amelia Island, Fla., John Hopkins (wife, Barbara), of Flowery Branch; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church “Preschool Ministry,” 410 Williams St., Waycross, Ga. 31501.

Sylvia M. Vining
Sylvia Ann Minix Vining, 70, of Waycross, died Monday evening (Jan. 12, 2015) at her residence.
She was born in Ben Hill County, to the late George and Pauline Ball Minix and lived most of her life in Waycross. She was retired from CSX Railroad as a clerk after 35 years of service. She was of the Baptist faith and enjoying sewing.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Wayne Vining, one brother, Raymond Minix.
Survivors include two sons, John Wayne “Jay” Vining (wife, Sheryl), of Brunswick, George Oliver Vining (wife, Rena), of Waycross; two grandchildren, Nadia Vining, of Statesboro, Liam Vining (wife, Chelsea), of Brunswick; three sisters, Janice Bell (husband, Alvin), of Waycross, Sarah Shuman (husband, Mike), of Hoboken, Melanie Crews (husband, Kevin), of Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, Donald Minix (wife, Alexis), of Waycross, Dennis Minix (wife, Jean), of Demorest; two sisters-in-law, Gail Johns, of Waycross, and Jeanette Lee, of Waycross; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel.
Inurnment will be at Oakland Cemetery at a later date.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 until 8 at the funeral home.

Jacob ‘Jake’ Pittman
Jacob “Jake” Pittman, 65, of Hoboken, died early Tuesday morning (Jan. 13, 2015) at Southeast Georgia Health System after a brief illness.
He was born in Waycross to the late James Pittman and Edna Oliver Pittman. He made Ware and Brantley counties his home for his entire life. He was a skilled carpenter who worked for many years building for various companies.
He was an avid animal lover and took great care of all animals he encountered, especially his dogs and chickens. He loved his family. He loved his granddaughter, Sydney, and any time he was able to spend with her.
He enjoyed cooking for family and friends and will forever be remembered as always having something ready to eat anytime someone would visit him.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gina Pittman, and two brothers, Robert L. Pittman and James Edward Pittman.
He is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Pittman Harrelson (husband, Alex), of Waynesville; a son, Jay Pittman, of Hoboken; a granddaughter, Sydney Harrelson, of Waynesville; a brother, Dan Smith Jr. (wife, Eloise), of Plant City, Fla.; six sisters, Alene Wingo (husband, James), of Plant City, Fla., Alvena Music (husband, Bill), of Waycross, Dot Smith, of Waycross, Betty King (husband, Raymond), of Waycross, Wanda Lee (husband, Jim), of Waycross, Modena Corbitt (husband, Charles), of Waycross; special cousins, John and Virgil Oliver; special niece, Marissa Tatum; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Laurie Johns Jones
BLACKSHEAR — Laurie Johns Jones, 83, of Blackshear, passed away Monday evening (Jan. 12, 2015) at the Pierce County Nursing Home.
Born in Hoboken, Sept. 15, 1931, she lived in Pierce County all of her adult life. She was a homemaker and volunteered as a Pink Lady at the Pierce County Nursing Home and as a personal sitter. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, loved to read and help others and dearly loved spoiling her grandchildren.
She was a daughter of the late Benton H. and Mary Rosella Jacobs Johns. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Randall Edward Jones Sr., a daughter, Margaret Hill, two sons, Randall Edward Jones Jr. and Henry Jackson Jones, and her sister, Lenell Hand.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Louise and Robert Sauls, of Blackshear, and Linda and Bill Music, of Hazlehurst; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Linda Jones and Jesse and Stacey Jones, all of Blackshear; a sister-in-law, Beatrice Johns, of Tennessee; 21 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the Pearson-Dial Chapel.
Interment will be in the Shiloh Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 at the funeral home.

BLACKSHEAR — Richard Crawley Smith, 63, of Blackshear, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 13, 2015) at his sister’s residence following a courageous battle with cancer.

Bobby Lamar Deen
BLACKSHEAR — The funeral for Bobby Lamar Deen, 60, was held Monday morning at 11 o’clock at the Pearson-Dial Chapel.
Officiating was Elder Johnny Lee.
Interment was in the Waters Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Kevin Deen, Mike Rozier, James Stanton Jr., Adam Smith, Mauro Rocha, Alvin Jones and David Davis.

A graveside service for Peggy Griffin Sanders, 70, was held Tuesday morning at High Bluff Cemetery near Hoboken with the Rev. Tim King officiating.
Pallbearers were Jason Lee, Clint Griffin, Arthur Davis, Kelly Davis, Lee Davis and Jamie Davis.
