LUDOWICI — A Georgia State Patrol spokesman said no report has been prepared regarding the fatal wreck involving a log truck and a car near here Saturday.
The death of Wayne County High School baseball standout and college hopeful J.D. Paul has left the Jesup community devastated, said a spokesman for the Long County Sheriff’s Department.
Paul, 18, was killed just after 2 p.m. Saturday when his red Ford Mustang veered across the center line of U.S. Highway 301 and collided head-on with an 18-wheel log truck, said the spokesman.
Long County Sheriff Craig Nobles said Paul was traveling north and the truck was traveling south. Paul entered into the south-bound lane, and both vehicles attempted to avoid the collision but were unable to do so.
Paul was flown to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, where he was pronounced dead several hours later, Nobles said.
Long County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted in helping Ludowici-Long County Fire and Rescue extricate Paul from his car.
“It is so sad,” said Nobles.
The accident remains under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol.
Paul’s funeral was being held this morning.
