A Blackshear woman was arrested on drug possession charges Monday when a Ware County deputy made a “routine” traffic stop for expired tag and found her in possession of marijuana and xanax, a prescription Schedule IV medication, said Ware County Sheriff Randy Royal.
Ashlee Nicole Pope, 26, of St. Johns Church Road, was taken to the Ware County jail on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of a Schedule IV drug, open container (40-ounce Budweiser), no insurance, possession of drugs not in their original container, expired tag and registration, said Royal.
While conducting routine patrol on Dewitt Street, Deputy Frankie Moran saw the 2001 Honda Accord that had an expired tag. He made a traffic stop and circumstances led him to call for a K-9 unit to conduct a free-air sniff of the car, said Royal.
Sgt. Michael Ray and his dog, Miko, responded. Royal said the animal indicated the presence of drugs. A search turned up a quantity of marijuana and the xanax, the sheriff said.
