BLACKSHEAR — An 18-year-old Blackshear man was injured severely Wednesday when his pickup truck crashed on U.S. Highway 84 as a result of cell phone distraction, said the Georgia State Patrol.
Blackshear Police Chief Chris Wright said the man, Alvin Paul, was taken by ambulance to Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross for treatment of his injuries.
“They thought they may have to lifeflight him, but they ended up taking him by ambulance to Mayo,” said Wright.
Driving a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado, Paul was westbound on U.S. 84 when he became distracted by his cell phone, said Steve Drury, GSP Brunswick post secretary.
The truck ran off the north shoulder for 86 feet, struck a culvert and vaulted 19 feet over a dirt driveway. Drury said the truck then continued for an additional 31 feet before striking a phone pole and another 95 feet, spinning counterclockwise, before coming to rest in a field on the north side of U.S. 84.
Trooper Dustin Stone investigated the 4:59 p.m. accident.
