Waycross city and Ware County firefighters were dispatched to a car fire in the maintenance garage at Walker-Jones car dealership, 2720 Ambrose St., just after noon Wednesday, said Ware Fire Capt. Matthew Grantham.
Both departments were toned out because it wasn’t initially clear whether the garage was in the city or in the county.
City Fire Chief David Eddins said the car, a 2008 Chevrolet Impala, was up on a lift when it caught fire from an undetermined cause. The heat from the fire melted some of the insulation in the building but caused no structural damage, said Eddins.
Nobody was injured.
As it turns out, it was determined the fire was inside the city limits.
“That is one of those areas that is right on the border of city and county,” said Eddins, “We worked together seamlessly and everyone did a great job. It was extremely hot and uncomfortable but these firefighters did a tremendous job.”
Firemen were summoned to the scene at 12:27 p.m. Battalion Chief Jimmy Brown was the ranking officer for the city, in charge of the fire units.
