Evelyn G. Griffin
Evelyn Florence Gilham Griffin, 91, of Waycross, died Tuesday morning (Aug. 4, 2015) at Baptist Village after an extended illness.
She was born in Ottwell, Ind., to the late Walter E. and June Alice Miller Theis.
She moved to Waycross in 1947 when she married Agie Marcus Griffin and worked for many years with the Waycross Sitter Service.
She loved playing cards, going to the beach, yard sales and loved to laugh and enjoy life.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Agie Marcus Griffin, one son, Walter Lee Gilham, and one sister, Virginia Howard.
Survivors include two sons, Terry Griffin (wife, Alison), of Waycross, Randy Griffin (wife, Sharon), of Brunswick; seven grandchildren, Alex Griffin, of Waycross, Josh Griffin (wife, Haley), of Waycross, Zack Griffin, of Valdosta, Mari Griffin Harden (husband, Mike), of Townsend, Margo Griffin Pitts (husband, Dustin), of Tifton, Marcus Griffin, of Alpharetta, Matthew Griffin (fiancee, Emery) of Birmingham, Ala.; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A graveside service will be held Friday morning at 10 o’clock at Piney Grove Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 until 8 at the funeral home.

Gary A. Sheffield
Gary Anthony Sheffield, 57, died suddenly Monday (Aug. 3, 2015) at his residence.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Waycross and was retired from General Box Company as a supervisor.
He was preceded in death by his father, Norbert Gerald Sheffield, and two siblings, Terry Preston and Teresa Preston.
Survivors include two sons, James Sheffield (Wendy) and Adam Sheffield (Kristy), both of Waycross; four grandchildren, Harley Sheffield, Makayla Musgrove, Ashley Musgrove and Brianna Larisey; one brother, Michael Sheffield (Kelly), of Blackshear; one sister, Debbie Stevens, of Ohio; two best friends, Grover Herrin and Randy Morgan; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorialization is by cremation.

Helen Proulx Smith
Helen Proulx Smith, 92, of Stuart, Fla., formerly a long-time resident of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away peacefully Thursday (July 30, 2015) after several weeks of declining health.
She was born in Holyoke, Mass., in 1923. She married Richard L. Smith, of Waycross, in 1943, whom she met at Westover Field, Mass.
She shared a military life with her Air Force husband, a lieutenant colonel, bomber pilot, commanding officer in the Strategic Air Command for 31 years. He participated in three wars, five conflicts and the Berlin Air Lift.
She traveled extensively to Europe, Japan and Hawaii, but reserved a special fondness for Alaska. Her husband was stationed twice at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, before statehood. They returned there for four and a half years in early retirement, before establishing a permanent home in Fernandina Beach.
In the ensuing years, she and her husband spent summers salmon fishing on Prince William Sound in Whittier, Alaska.
She attended nursing school in Springfield, Mass., and was a practicing nurse on bases where her husband was stationed. She served in the hospital auxiliary in Fernandina Beach for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1994. They were married 51 years.
She is survived by her companion, Ray Davis; two sons, Richard, of Indian Hills, Calif., and Anchorage, Alaska, and Scott, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; daughters-in-law, Barbara, of Indian Hills, Calif., and Debra, of Hobe Sound, Fla.; three grandchildren, Daniel, of Aventura, Fla., Cary, of Palm City, Fla., and Krista, of Hobe Sound, Fla.
A memorial service will be held at the Stuart Church of Christ on Thursday.
Virgil Lee Hamilton
Virgil Lee Hamilton Sr., 68, died suddenly Tuesday (Aug. 4, 2015) at Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross.
Funeral arrangements incomplete and will be announced later by Music Funeral Home.
Mary M. Lane
A funeral for Mary M. Lane was held Tuesday morning at Music Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Inman Jr. and the Rev. Larry Altman officiating.
Burial followed at Greenlawn Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ronald Altman, Si Altman, Brandon Carlson, Ellis Daniels, Andrew Fullard and Bobby Stone.

Hazel Justice Peacock
A funeral for Hazel Justice Peacock, 77, of Waycross, took place Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock in the chapel of Hart Funeral Home with the Rev. Derwin Griffin officiating.
Serving as pallbearers were Brad Griffin, Michael Patterson, Jerry Peacock, David Groover, Chandler Pierce and Justin Mason.
Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery in Waycross.
Hart Funeral Home of Blackshear was in charge of arrangements.
