BLACKSHEAR — One man is in critical condition at Memorial Hospital in Savannah and a second man is behind bars charged with assaulting the victim with a concrete block Wednesday in the 3600 block of U.S. 84, said Blackshear Police Chief Chris Wright.
Henry Futch, 44, was taken by Pierce County Emergency Medical Service ambulance to Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross for evaluation and treatment, said Wright. Because of the severity of his injuries he was then transported by ambulance to Memorial Hospital in Savannah where he remained in critical condition this morning, Wright said.
He said bad weather precluded the use of a life-flight helicopter.
Cecil NeSmith Jr., 39, of Cherry Street, Blackshear, has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery and additionally with interference with government property for trying to kick the windows out of a patrol car while en route to jail, said Wright.
Wright said the man’s father, Cecil NeSmith Sr., 62, was also arrested and charged with hindering the apprehension of a criminal.
“We have not yet established a motive but I can tell you that some kind of dispute led to NeSmith Jr. striking Mr. Futch in the head with a piece of a cinder block about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday,” said Wright. “After we processed the scene, we then arrested NeSmith Jr. about 9:30 last night at his father’s home on Cherry Street. He was found hiding under a bed.”
NeSmith Jr. was being held in the Ware County jail. NeSmith Sr. was in the Pierce County jail.
NeSmith Jr. was scheduled for a first appearance hearing this morning, Wright said.
