A tractor trailer driver was making a right turn off Mallard Road (a dirt road) onto Albany Avenue Tuesday about 3:50 p.m. when the right tires of the trailer began to slide on the sandy road surface and the semi slid into a ditch, said Ware County Sheriff Randy Royal.
It was thought at the time that the trailer had struck a gas main, compromising the line. Royal said residents in the area were evacuated for about an hour and a half while Atlanta Gas and Light officials arrived and worked to secure the gas main.
“There was no damage to the main, but we evacuated the area as a precaution,” said Royal. “There was no leak of gas.”
Royal said everyone was allowed to return home and no problems were experienced.
The truck became stuck in the ditch and had to be pulled out by wrecker, Royal said.
The driver, Joseph Steven Aldridge, 35, of Douglas, was not injured. The 2002 Peterbilt rig with a conventional cab was not damaged.
